What We Do For Our Employees
What makes us different is our staff. We are a team of self-starters that believe not only in hard work, but most importantly, smart work. We believe in motivating our staff through great benefits, personal growth, performance based pay, and hobby development. Here is an overview of each:
We offer an attractive health insurance plan and are currently investigating the possibility of a 401k plan. We believe in working hard and playing hard, so our Vacation Policy includes 14 days in your first year and 20 days per year after. We also believe in the little things like flexible hours. We’ll pay for child care for weekly date nights and offer weekly and monthly outings, and more.
At Harnessing Strengths we believe personal growth is the most important part of the employee/employer relationship and work-life balance. Every day, we tell our staff to set aside one hour in the morning for their personal quiet time. This is a time where the employee can read their Bibles, devotions, industry news, blogs, stats, articles, books, training courses, and more. The goal of this time is to foster personal growth. We include this during the work day because we want to make certain that this is a fostered priority in their life. We also have one-on-one monthly individual meetings to talk, go over what they are learning, how they are growing, and how we can help more, etc.
Performance Based Pay
Let’s be honest, for an employee to be happy, they have to make good money and have the chance for professional growth. At Harnessing Strengths, we always compensate employees with a good base and strongly believe in good performance based-pay whenever possible. We believe if somebody wants to double their income in one year they should be able to. We believe in talking with each employee about their income needs and goals and putting together a plan to help them accomplish this. We also believe in profit sharing at the end of the year. We believe that as a business continues to grow, we should spread a portion of the profits out to all of the employees as well.
Our Hobbies/Side Businesses
At Harnessing Strengths, we encourage all of our employees to create a hobby or side business that they have a strong passion for. Then we do everything we can as a company to fund and support it and use all of our shared expertise to help grow the business. So, depending on the employee’s hobby, we might help them host their websites, build them an e-commerce site, put together a full marketing strategy for the company and actually implement it, or even train them on how to manage and grow their business or hobby and start making money with it.
As a result, we create a bunch of happy employees that love the company that they work for and would do anything and everything they can for us, but still have their own outlet, hobby, and in control of other own future. And what we have found is that as we work as a team, we create life-long friends who if they do leave one day because their business becomes so successful, we throw a party and celebrate because we have become family and have helped make another dream come true. Past employees also become great clients and references for us in the future.
Like most other financially responsible companies, we don’t offer pensions to our employees, but we want our staff to be able to retire earlier, play golf, travel and not work their entire life. So we believe we are stewards of our employee’s livelihood and it is our responsibility as their employers to help them accomplish their dreams and achieve financial independence.
At Harnessing Strengths, we believe that family is the most important part of life. We believe that a great marriage is the only option. We think that being the best dad or best mom is an absolute must. We encourage our staff to help with their kid’s homework every day and never miss family time because of work. We believe that quiet walks with their spouse and dog should be a regular occurrence. We believe that you would always make it home for family dinner every night. And should always do everything you can to you always go to bed with your spouse. We believe every married couple needs to have a special date night set aside each week for just the two of them. Our company believes in this so much, we pay for child care for our staff’s date night once a week.
Some people ask, how do you get any work done if you allow your employees to do all of this. And the answer is simple. Our employees actually work harder and get more done when they know they don’t have the pressures of missing something important at home. And just as we are fair to employees about making all the important events, we find that our employees actually return the favor and pull out their laptops after dinner when watching a TV show, or get up extra early on days they have to leave early. It doesn’t mean we work less; we just work smarter.
We have no set hours and are very flexible, but as a whole, most of us are up and started early around 7 am. You’ll often see some of us online working after dinner. As with any good programming department, we have a couple of programmers that do their best work between 9 pm and 3 am. But as long as projects come in on-time and on-budget, and at the highest quality, we allow our staff to work flexible hours.
We don’t work for our clients, we partner with them to achieve mutual goals. We partner with our clients so that we have the same aims… the same urgency… the same focus. We believe in training our clients on as many things as we can and always spend the extra time explaining the details, so they understand what and why we do what we do. Unlike most firms, it is not our goal to build your dependency on us, but to actually give you the tools and expertise to grow your business yourself.
And the best part about our clients is they have are always doing what they came to help grow our business as well. Most of our clients come from referrals, we actually don’t have to do much marketing ourselves, because we get some many referrals. We always reward our clients for each referral and give 2 hours of work for free each referral. And depending on how big the referral is, the two hours can group too much bigger or what ever is fair. Needless to say, we have had some clients get brand new websites or a weekend vacation with the family for big referrals. We appreciate our clients and do everything we can to show that appreciation.
Charity, Volunteering, and Missions
It is our goal to lead by example and the first 10% of all the company income goes to charity. Once a month, we have office volunteer day and volunteer all of our services as a team to a charity. Sometimes, we go build a house, pick up trash at a park, rebuild a charity website, or volunteer at a homeless shelter. But we believe that volunteering does not just change the people you’re helping but also greatly changes the heart of the person who is doing the volunteering. We find that our employees not only learn to love volunteering but actually create a great relationship with the people we are serving.
Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, Harnessing Strengths sponsor a family. Our teams all chips in to provide Thanksgiving meals and Christmas gifts. We also try and partner with a family that has a service-based skill and we also build a full company, website and marketing plan and train them on how to make their business to the next level and generate a steady income stream. Most of our sponsor families become lifelong friends and family and partners.
And once a year, we try and go on a mission trip as a company, we close the office down for a week and go as a team with our families provide all our services as a team to transform a church, a city, a country and importantly individual lives. We believe in going deep instead of wide and giving everything we can spread God’s love to the world around us. Every time we get back, we actually learn that the trips change our lives even more than who was there to serve. God is an amazing God!
Okay, so we love golf, we have families, we work a little too much, and our swings are a little ugly, but we do our best to never miss Wednesday afternoon nine group in the summer time. On Wednesday with good-weather days, you will find employees, spouses, clients, and investors who all put 5 dollars in a pot and go to play nine holes. We also have company tournaments every couple months on Friday. And the week of The Masters and other majors golf tournaments, we always slow things down a little and the TV is always on. And for those of you don’t understand, well… you kind of have to be a golfer.
Road Bike Groups
In the summer time, at 7:00 am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, you often find a small team of road bike riders made up of our employees, spouses, clients and investors getting an hour or so of riding in before work. Yes, we are those dorky riders with the spandex and team jerseys going 15 to 23 mph down the road in a pack. You will sometimes see a view of us in big event rides throughout the summer.
Married Life Live
At Harnessing Strengths, we believe every couple needs to put their marriage first, so we pay for tickets for all of our staff and spouses if they wish to go to a Married Life Live events at NPCC. They are well worth it and a lot of fun. We definitely recommend them to everybody. Let us know if you are going and you will often see a group of our staff and even clients at the events.
Life Lessons Over Lunch
Though we all work from home, on Tuesdays, we pay for our employee’s lunch if they come to a specific location and watch a 30-minute sermon from Andy Stanley at North Point Community Church. It is not as painful as it sounds, you don’t even have to be Christian or a church person, all of Andy’s messages are very applicable to real life. And for free food, we always fill up a room. And for employees that can’t make it, they can participate over GoToMeeting and watch from home.
